Paul: When we have kids, we won't have any loud toys.
Andrea: (dubiously) Uh.....sure.
Paul: I mean, come on!! That plastic spinney thing in the nursery that makes the honking noise? No. Way. No way.
Andrea: Except for remember when we didn't have kids yet and had no idea what that would be like?
Paul: Well, but we're the grown ups! We get to say what is and is not okay, right?
Andrea: But what if someone gives us a spinney thing that makes a honking noise?
Paul: Then we give it to someone in need. Like, "Here, here is a toy for your Neanderthal baby to bang his fists upon."
Andrea: Except for kids bang their fists instinctively no matter what, right?
Paul: Our kids will bang their fists on wood blocks, not like the other babies, banging their prehistoric heads on plastic honking spinney things.
Andrea: Wow. We're elitist when we're parents.

You won't have a neanderthal baby either.
When you guys have your baby, I'm going to give Paul a spinny thing that honks. Not the baby. Just Paul. And if he feels like it, he can share it with the baby.
marianne- yeah, but i was thinking....neanderthal is a kind of awesome baby name, right? like, meet my son, Neanderthal Boerem. he's the one playing with the plastic honking spinny thing.
redstarmama- that's it, right? paul just feels like he didn't get enough plastic spinney honking things as a child! i should really pay you for the therapy you do.
I HATE that toy in the Nursery too! Last week at least 3 children stepped on it and fell as it slid under their feet, banana peel-style.
We are elitist not-yet-parents too. (It's the best kind.) Our children will be perfectly amused with what we call "clean trash," e.g., boxes, rinsed yogurt containers, and maybe some dried beans.
I hope none of the nursery parents read that first part. No one was hurt. Badly.
